The majority of us will spend over 35 years in our beds. Despite this surprising statistic, a large percentage of us still report being chronically tired. While this is likely due to multiple factors, a big one may have to do with the state of our bedrooms. Some of us toss clothes on the floor or drape them over furniture. We leave our blankets rumpled and water cups and bottles on the nightstand. All this clutter can have a negative impact on your sleep quality. Luckily, we can apply some simple principles of feng shui to the bedroom and to reclaim our sleep space and create feelings of relaxation and peace.
Feng Shui Tips for the Bedroom
Clear the Clutter
First things first, clean your bedroom. Any items that have no use or personal meaning should be discarded or donated. The less clutter in your bedroom, the more space you have to dedicate to its true purpose, which is rest and romance. Both activities will be greatly enhanced by a room that is clean, bright, and fresh.
- Pick up all clothes off the floor and put them in a dedicated hamper out of sight.
- Take out all dishes and cups and bring them to the kitchen to wash.
- Empty waste baskets and throw away any other trash, such as wrappers and tissues.
- Dust furniture, clean windows, and wipe down other surfaces that need it
Make sure your bedding and curtains are also freshly laundered. Musty smells are not conducive to relaxation or intimacy.
Choose the Best Layout
Your bed is arguably the most important part of your bedroom, and its placement is tantamount to achieving good feng shui in the space. Ideally, your bed should be against the wall opposite the door. This means you will be able to see anyone coming into your bedroom, alleviating any conscious or unconscious stress about being caught unaware.
Feng shui also encourages the use of a headboard. As a support structure, this can translate into feelings of being grounded and secure while you sleep.
If possible, your bed should be angled so that you can look out onto a beautiful view, like your garden. If this is not feasible, adding a mirror that reflects a peaceful scene can also be beneficial.
For other furniture and accents, try to keep it as symmetrical as possible. There should be two nightstands with two identical lights (or at least similar). An even number of pillows is also optimal. Choose decor that is minimalist but which has some meaning to you.

Choose a Color Scheme
Colors can affect our perception of a room’s purpose. In feng shui, colors represent the various elements of wood, fire, metal, earth, and water. Each element evokes different feelings and is symbolized by certain colors. Earth color schemes, for example, incorporate colors found in nature, such as creams and browns. These color schemes can produce feelings of stability and balance, which makes them an excellent choice for a bedroom.
Feng shui is all about balance, so you will need to make sure you do not over do your earth element colors. This is easily done by bringing in a touch of fire with a few candles, peach-colored pillows, or a warm-hued work of art. The fire element will also help to awaken passion within a space otherwise dedicated to sleeping.
Choose a Scent
Like colors, scents can have an enormous impact on how we feel in a room. Some evoke feelings of energy or romance, while others promote relaxation or concentration. Consider getting a diffuser to gently disperse one of these aromas associated with peace and relaxation:
- Lavender
- Lemon balm
- Peppermint
- Bergamot
- Ylang Ylang
- Marjoram
Feng Shui as a Guide
The beautiful thing about feng shui is that it is fairly flexible. Each and every touch should, first and foremost, bring you joy. You can rely on the above steps as a guideline for improving the flow of energy in your bedroom, but feel free to add and subtract as is necessary to suit your personal tastes and needs. Your happiness is the ultimate guide to the flow of energy within the home, so be sure to make that a priority just as much as the placement of your bed.
